Ofgem has announced that energy suppliers will pay a total of £18.6m to customers who had prepayment meters installed without their consent between 1 January 2022 and 1 January 2023.
This sum includes £5.6m in direct compensation and £13m in debt write-offs.
At least 40,000 customers will be affected. Impacted customers will be contacted directly by their energy supplier and will receive compensation ranging from £40 to £1,000, based on the extent of the detriment caused.
